Unicycle Basketball at Berkeley/Berkeley Revolution Logo + Banner (Blue and Gold)

FAQ

Do you dribble?

Yes (1 step = 1 pedal stroke). Full basketball rules apply, with the provision that you must be riding a unicycle to play the ball.

Is it dangerous/do you fall a lot?

There are collisions and some falls, but significant injury is rare. The injury rate is similar to that of other contact sports such as pedestrian basketball or soccer.

Do you wear protective equipment?

Some people do, some don’t. Shin and ankle guards are the most worn pieces of protection.

How long does it take to learn to unicycle?

The average is about 10 hours of practice.

What unicycle do you recommend?

The Torker LX or the Unicycle.com Club and Nimbus lines are good choices.

Where can I buy a unicycle?

Start by checking out Craigslist to see if you can find anything used. Don’t pay more than ~$40 unless its for a respected brand in good shape. If you're buying new, Unicycle.com is hard to beat (contact us if you’re placing an order and want to try to save on shipping).

What size unicycle is good for basketball?

We play mostly on 24” wheels, though 20” wheels are also fine, and some people prefer them. 24” give you more speed and height, whereas 20” gives you more maneuverability. A 24” makes riding across town faster/easier. Unless you’re shorter than 4’8”, avoid wheels smaller than 20”. Wheels larger than 24” are not maneuverable enough for basketball.

Anything else I should know about picking a unicycle?

Avoid metal pedals (for the sake of our shins, and for when we play indoors on wood floors).
